Stretch Therapy Glossary

Plain-English definitions of the terms used in stretch therapy certification, licensing, and practice. Written by CNU Stretch — the leading turnkey stretch therapy system for gym owners, health club owners, studios, and fitness professionals.

Stretch Therapy

Stretch therapy is a practitioner-led service that uses structured, assisted stretching techniques to improve flexibility, mobility, recovery, and performance. Unlike self-stretching, it is delivered by a trained specialist who positions, stabilizes, and moves the client through protocol-driven ranges of motion.

Also called: assisted stretching, professional stretching, guided flexibility training.

Assisted Stretching

A form of stretching in which a trained practitioner moves a client's limbs and joints through a controlled range of motion while the client remains passive or partially engaged. The practitioner applies precise pressure, stabilization, and angles that the client cannot reproduce alone.

Primary service delivered in the CNU Stretch system.

PNF Stretching (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)

A stretching method that alternates contraction and relaxation of a target muscle to increase range of motion. Widely considered one of the most effective flexibility techniques for experienced practitioners, PNF leverages the body's stretch reflex to unlock deeper range without force.

Taught in CNU Stretch Level II (Peak) Certification.

Fascial Stretch Therapy

A table-based assisted stretching modality that targets the fascia — the connective tissue surrounding muscles and joints — using traction, oscillation, and multi-planar movement. Aims to improve joint capsule mobility, circulation, and whole-body movement quality.

Covered in CNU Stretch Level II curriculum.

Static Stretching

Holding a stretch in a fixed position for 15–60 seconds without bouncing. The most common form of self-directed stretching. Effective for post-workout recovery and baseline flexibility, but limited compared to assisted methods for restoring compromised range of motion.

Dynamic Stretching

Active, movement-based stretching performed through a full range of motion without holding an end position. Used primarily as a warm-up to prepare muscles for activity. Distinct from — and complementary to — assisted stretch therapy.

Flexibility Training

The broad category of training focused on increasing the range of motion available at a joint. Stretch therapy is a subset of flexibility training that uses practitioner-assisted techniques to achieve results beyond what clients can produce on their own.

Mobility

The ability to actively move a joint through its available range of motion with control. Mobility combines flexibility (passive range) and strength (active control). Stretch therapy directly improves the flexibility input; paired training improves the strength input.

Range of Motion (ROM)

The measurable distance and direction a joint can move between its flexed and extended positions. ROM is the primary metric stretch practitioners assess and track. Improvements in ROM correlate with reduced injury risk, better performance, and better quality of life.

CEU (Continuing Education Unit)

The credit unit issued by professional certifying bodies (NASM, ACE, AFAA, ISSA, NCBTMB) that practitioners must earn periodically to maintain their credentials. CNU Stretch is an approved CEU provider with each of these five organizations.

Stretch Licensing (vs. Franchise)

A business model in which a gym or studio adopts a proven stretch therapy system under license — gaining the curriculum, branding, playbooks, and ongoing support — without the franchise fees, royalties, and territorial restrictions of a traditional franchise. CNU Stretch operates on a licensing model.

Ancillary Revenue

Revenue a gym, studio, or health club earns outside its core membership dues — including personal training, recovery services, and stretch therapy. Ancillary revenue typically carries higher margins and improves member retention by deepening the relationship.
